Graduate School in Economics and Management (GSEM) of the Universities of Ca' Foscari Venice, Padua and Verona (Italy) is pleased to announce the availability of a limited number of three-year PhD Research Scholarships starting from the academic year 2011-12

The GSEM at the University of Ca’ Foscari Venice solicits applications for admission to the joint Ph.D. programs in Economics and Business offered in Venice. The degree will be awarded jointly by the Universities of Padua, Ca' Foscari Venice and Verona.

Candidates interested in the program are strongly urged to apply for a scholarship also at the Universities of Padova and Verona. Attention: If you intend applying in the three Universities remember to send the required documents in the three Universities.

The Ph.D. programmes in Economics and Business of Ca' Foscari Venice are designed to train doctoral candidates in a broad area of advanced study in micro, macro, econometrics, finance and behavioural economics for careers in teaching and research in universities, in public and private research organizations, in financial and consulting institutions and in private companies. The GSEM recruits promising students from Italy and abroad and all courses are taught in English. Students are accepted directly for the Ph.D. degree. As prerequisite, by July 15, 2011 candidates must hold a five-year bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Italy or the equivalent level of education from an institution outside Italy.

The admission procedure consists of an evaluation of candidates’ qualifications. To apply candidates must send their application following the instructions in the official Call, which can be downloaded from the Ca’ Foscari University website. English version

The deadline for application is June 17th, 2011 – 12.30 pm. Successful candidates will be notified by email by July 22nd, 2011.

The Programme will start on October 3rd, 2011. Refresher Math course: Sept. 12th-16th (highly recommended); Math preliminary course: Sept. 19th to Sept. 30th (compulsory).

Classes are common to the three Universities. During the Fall term (October-December), Ph.D. students will attend compulsory courses in Venice (Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Game Theory, Microeconomics 1, Organization Theory). During the Winter term (January-March), students will attend compulsory courses offered in Padua (Econometrics, Microeconomics 2, Macroeconomics 1, Industrial Organization). During the Spring term (April-June), electives courses will take place in Venice, Padua and Verona.

    The general application procedure is the same for the three Universities. Simultaneous applications to more than one program and to more than one University are encouraged.

    An application must abide by the statute of their respective "Bando" (Official Advert) as published on the Gazzetta Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana.     Brief Guidelines on how to apply - CALL FOR APPLICATIONS AY 2011/2012
    These are guidelines to assist you in making your application to the Graduate School in Economics and Management Doctorate programs 2011-12 and should be considered as informal information and are in no way legally binding: All the information on requirements, how to apply, scholarships and tuition fees are availableon the Ca' Foscari University website. Application process:

a) Read carefully the "Official Advert - Bando" (English version) and the chart of the program chosen "Attachment A"- "English version of Attachment A"

b) make sure to have the right requirements stated in Art. 4 of the official advert and in "Attachment A"

c) online registration on the University website. You will be given a username and password. If you already have credentials to access the reserved area (eg. you are a former Ca' Foscari student) you can skip this stage.

d)  Fill in the application form by logging into your Reserved Area and following this path: Admission test > Registration > Phd courses.

e) The degrees and publications must be submitted in electronic format and attached to the online application, along with a list of publications (Attachment "B") English version of "Attachment B". If the publications to be submitted are not available in electronic format or are particularly long, the candidate can submit them separately, along with a list of publications (Attachment "B"), no later than 17th June 2011 - at 12:30 p.m:

  • by hand to the Enrolment and Student Welcoming office (Ufficio immatricolazioni e accoglienza studenti) of the Ca' Foscari University of Venice - Dorsoduro 3246, 30123 Venice (1st floor), during public opening times: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9.30am to 12.30pm; Wednesday also from 2.30pm to 4.30pm (no reservation is required);
  • sent by letter or by private carrier company to Ca' Foscari University of Venice - Ufficio Protocollo Informatico, Dorsoduro 3246, 30123 Venezia. The postmark date will not be considered legally binding. On the envelope the following details must be clearly written:
    Application for admission to Research doctorate in [please indicate the doctoral course]

f) All documents shall be submitted in Italian or English, namely translated in Italian or English by the candidate. The qualifications submitted shall be obtained within the application deadline

g) If a letter of recommendation is required in Annex "A", you can use this template. The referees have to submit the letters of recommendation directly, within 17th June 2011 - at 12:30 p.m:.

h) If your academic degree has been earned in a foreign country, complete the online questionnaire ("Information about foreign qualification").

i) Be sure to complete the online application: your application will be compiled when you'll see the button "Print application"

Deadline: Ensure that your application arrives by and not after 17th of June 2011 at 12.30 pm.   Applications arriving after this time will not be accepted.

Obligatory attachments to the application form according to Attachment A:

- Curriculum Vitae

- Degree Certificate –or equivalent qualification with transcripts of exams and grade/marks.

- Statement of purpose written in English language -The candidate should describe his/her scientific and research interests, (max 10.000 characters, including spaces)

- At least two letters of recommendation from university professors or scientific researchers (one letter has to attest the candidate’s adequate knowledge of English language).     Please note:

    *Candidates who have not yet obtained their degree can apply according to rules stated in the official announcement, provided that they obtain their degree before the first meeting of the Evaluation Committee (15th of July 2011). Within that deadline, the above mentioned candidates are required to communicate the degree date and the final mark and to present the Degree certificate or, as an alternative, a self-statement per fax (Fax number: 0039 041 234 7547) or via email to .

  • Foreign academic qualifications: if you have foreign academic qualifications you are required to fill in the "Information about foreign qualification" online questionaire and attach:

§ the degree certificate listing the exams, in Italian or in English or translated into Italian or into English.
§ any further document useful to evaluate the validity of the academic qualification/title attained to apply for the call (Diploma Supplement, Europass Curriculum Vitae, a “statement of value” that is an official degree declaration approved, translated, and legalized by a diplomatic presentation of the country where the degree was obtained, etc).

    *Candidates with a foreign academic qualification will be admitted to the examinations under reservation. Therefore, if they qualify for admission as winners, they will have to submit the documents as stated in the official announcement. Art. 11, paragraph 4 upon enrolment.
